[Letters from Miss E.H. Sanford to "my very dear pastor" [John Albert Broadus] concerning her sea voyage to California] / E.H. Sanford. 1853, Sept. 13-Oct. 6.

Sept. 13, Ripton, Vt. "I expect to take a mail steamer, the Nicaragua route. I expect to stay a day or two in New York before embarking. Oct.5, Castleton. "Although I went to New York, I did not embark. Could not find my sister at the place I expected to meet her. Lost the address of a friend and suffered very much anxiety of mind. In despair of finding whether they were in the city or not, I came back and now hope to leave the 20th inst. One of my greatest causes of grief was I feared I did not trust the Lord as I ought, in my sore need ... Excuse the writing, my hand is lame, from excessive fatigue and excitement, I suppose. I expect to go to Shoreham, Vt. today. My sister was writing from there when she wrote me to meet them in New York." Oct. 6, Shoreham. "In the providence of God, I was not permitted to find my friends that I expected to meet in New York, and they have left me! Sailed yesterday. The future is now uncertain (as it ever is in this world) but all must be for the best or the compassionate Savior would not have permitted it. I need humbling."
